Maxthon vise à proposer un maximum de fonctionnalité et une interface utilisateur hautement personnalisable, sans perdre la compatibilité avec Internet Explorer.

En janvier 2006, les développeurs de Maxthon ont formé un partenariat avec Microsoft, qu'ils ont annoncé lors du Consumer Electronics Show. Maxthon a remporté son premier WebWare 100 Award en 2005, et il a remporté le WebWare 100 Award aussi en 2008<ref>http://www.maxthon.com/press/ww100/index.htm</ref>et 2009. Historique

Maxthon a été basé sur MyIE, à l'origine créé par Changyou, un programmeur chinois, qui a voulu adapter son navigateur Internet Explorer. Changyou a publié la majeure partie du code sur son BBS, avant de laisser le projet en 2000. Jeff Chen a continué le développement et a réalisé une nouvelle version, appelée MyIE2. MyIE2 s'est développé rapidement, avec des participations des utilisateurs autour du monde, dans les secteurs comprenant les plugins, les skins et le debugging.

a été renommé Maxthon en 2004. Il a reçu le seed funding du premier investisseur de Skype Morten Lund,  et du WI Harper Group en 2005. En 2006 Maxthon reçut d’autres investissements de la société de venture capital Charles River Ventures.<ref>Modèle:Cite web</ref>

Version 1.x

The latest release of the Classic Version is 1.6.5.18 and is currently available for download on the official website. This updated version has been tested and found to function properly with Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, 7 and 8 on Microsoft Windows XP Home, XP Professional, all releases of Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Maxthon's upcoming major version, 3.0, currently under beta testing, will support two engines, Trident and WebKit.<ref>Modèle:Cite web</ref> Information and pictures of the new version have been released, showing that the browser will be able to quickly switch between several browsing modes, offering greater speed or standard compliance.
