Dans la catégorie des petits lecteurs audio qui en ont sous le capot, voici XMPlay, un concurrent discret mais qui gagnerait à être connu. XMPlay tire son nom de ses origines : le lecteur était avant tout destiné aux fichiers XM, que les amateurs de mods connaissent bien. Le logiciel a fait du chemin depuis,puisqu'il lit désormais de nombreux formats audio : MP3, OGG, WMA et WAV en standard, mais aussi FLAC, AAC ou Monkey Audio par l'intermédiaire de plugins et même de nombreux formats de musique de jeux vidéo (C64, Amiga, SNES ...)



Pas de fioritures au niveau de l'interface, néanmoins XMPlay n'a pas grand chose à envier aux "grands" dans ce domaine. Skins "freeform" et plugins sont de la partie même s'ils ne sont évidemment pas aussi nombreux que ceux de Winamp. A l'image de Coolplayer, XMPlay ne s'embrasse pas de fonctionnalités et ne propose que ce que proposait Winamp 2.x
